Couples Therapy Intensives in Durham NC

Make more progress in a shorter amount of time

Extended couples therapy sessions give you and your partner focused time to work on recurring conflict, infidelity, emotional distance, intimacy concerns, or an important decision about your relationship.

Is weekly couples therapy just not enough right now?

You want to make meaningful progress without spreading the work across months

A standard therapy hour can end just as you begin getting to the heart of an important issue. An intensive gives you more uninterrupted time to understand what is happening and work on it together.

Í¢

Your relationship needs more focused attention

Maybe you are dealing with an affair or another breach of trust. Maybe the same conflict keeps affecting communication, affection, sex, parenting, or daily life. Or perhaps you are facing a transition or decision that will shape the future of your relationship.

Í¢

Couples therapy intensives give you concentrated time to do the work that can be difficult to accomplish in a traditional weekly session.

What is a couples therapy intensive?

A couples therapy intensive brings several hours of therapeutic work together within a concentrated period instead of dividing that work into weekly appointments.

The additional time allows us to move beyond describing the problem. We can slow down the conversations that keep going wrong, understand each partner's responses, and practice different ways of communicating in the room.

1

Assessment and Preparation

We begin with a one-hour couples consultation and a relationship assessment. Each partner then meets with me individually for one hour so I can understand both perspectives and what each of you wants to address. Depending on the concern, I may also recommend written exercises before the intensive.

I draw from Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy and the Gottman Method to help couples address criticism, defensiveness, emotional withdrawal, recurring conflict, and injuries to trust. Your intensive is tailored to your relationship, your concerns, and what you hope to accomplish.

2

Intensive Sessions

The intensive consists of one or more three-hour couples sessions. That uninterrupted time lets us work in depth on the concerns bringing you in. The primary focus is active therapeutic work together in session.

3

Integration and Follow-Up

After the intensive, we meet for a one-hour session to review what you learned, consolidate the work, and identify what comes next. One follow-up session is included. An intensive may address a specific concern or become the beginning of ongoing couples therapy.

What your intensive includes:

  • One-hour couples consultation

  • Relationship assessment

  • One-hour individual session with each partner

  • One or more three-hour couples intensive sessions

  • Written exercises or preparation when helpful

  • One-hour follow-up and integration session

  • A treatment plan tailored to your relationship

Options:

Choose the right amount of focused time for your relationship

Some couples need concentrated attention around one specific issue. Others benefit from several extended sessions across two or three days. We will discuss which format makes the most sense for your concerns during the consultation.

Imagine Finally Being Able to…

Talk about difficult subjects without ending up in the same argument

Recognize what happens between you when a conversation begins to deteriorate and practice responding differently.

Address hurt or disconnection without rushing through it

Give emotional injuries, infidelity, or another important concern enough time and attention to be understood.

Leave with a clearer understanding of what comes next

Clarify what each of you needs, what needs to change, and whether your next step is continued couples therapy or another direction.

Give your relationship the time and attention it needs.

A free consultation is an opportunity to discuss what has been happening, what you want to accomplish, and whether an intensive is the right fit for your relationship.
